Press Release: Bahamas 2024 Twenty-five Cent Coin Wins IACA’s International Award for Best New Commemorative/Limited Circulation Coin

Published: Wednesday October 30th, 2024

On 29th October 2024, the International Association of Currency Affairs (IACA) announced The Bahamas Series 2024 twenty-five cent circulation coin as the Best New Commemorative/Limited Circulation Coin. The Series 2024 twenty-five cent circulation coin, painted on both sides, was issued in June 2024 to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Central Bank of The Bahamas. This was the first circulation coin, ever, to be painted on both sides, produced by the Royal Canadian Mint, in limited mintage of three million pieces. The award was presented to the Central Bank of The Bahamas at the Coin Conference in Lisbon, Portugal (www.thecoinconference.com).

The circulation coin industry remains abuzz about the Central Bank’s strategic rollout of the coin and related products. Deputy Governor Derek Rolle accepted the award, citing that “the Bank wanted to give the public a unique coin that would get widespread use, without altering the country’s denominational mix. We wanted everyone to share in the Central Bank’s 50th Anniversary celebration.” Meanwhile, Saverino Spangnolo, International Sales Manager for the Royal Canadian Mint, said that the Central Bank of The Bahamas “challenged us to deliver something new and innovative, something that had not been done before. The result was this stunning version of the existing 25-cent coin, painted on both sides. We had never before applied paint to the coat of arms of any circulation coin.”

In addition to standard coins observed in active circulation, the Central Bank produced 3,000 limited edition rolls of the coin, available for purchase through authorized dealers.
